The Forest of Arden

The arden is a large area of woodland and rural areas in Warwickshire, England. It was once a thickly forested area and is now largely deforested, but it still retains a number of remnants of its ancient past.

The Forest of Arden is not actually a national park, but the Forest of Arden Way is a waymarked UK National Trail that runs through the countryside surrounding it. It is a beautiful area to visit and features many historic monuments and sites.

During the medieval era, travellers would pray before entering The Forest of Arden to ensure they would be able to reach their destination safely. A wayside cross known as Coughton Cross, positioned at the southern end of the forest, is believed to have been a place where people would pray before they entered the woods.

There are many towns and villages in the arden, including Henley-in-Arden, Tanworth-in-Arden, Hampton-in-Arden and Coleshill. The town of Arden itself is an important centre for tourism and is also home to a popular golf course.

Arden Sandstone

The distinctive white heterolithic sandstone quarried in the arden has been used to build some of the area’s finest buildings. It has a large amount of calcium carbonate (‘lime’) in it which gives it a reddish hue.

A number of historic villages are located in the arden, including Temple Balsall and Knowle. The latter is famous for its ruins of an Iron Age castle.

Henley-in-Arden and Tanworth-in-Arden are the largest and most well known towns in the arden, although there are also many smaller and less developed towns in the arden as well.

Other places to see in the arden are Stratford-upon-Avon, where Shakespeare was born, and Warwickshire’s famous Stratford-upon-Avon theatre. The arden is also home to the University of Warwick, where the world-renowned Shakespeare Institute has a campus.

Arden is a major center for the retail industry, with several prominent high-end national tenants. It is also a center of commerce, with the majority of its sales coming from shopping, dining and entertainment.
